I did it! I finally completed reading the entire Narnia series by C.S. Lewis and then I watched all the movies too. Why did I do this? To be 100% honest I did it because I felt like it. Then as i started reading them I remembered all those happy times when my dad had read them to me as a kid, and how he had read them to my younger siblings just this past year, yup those are definitely some happy memories. ANYWAY, when I finished the last page of "The Last Battle" I felt like I'd accomplished something. I love that feeling of knowing that I've set my mind to something, and even thought it took WAY longer than it should have, I did it in the end.
I wish that the Narnia series was on a book list for High School English classes, there is so much that you can write about and discuss in these books, plus they aren't boring. I feel like eighty percent of all of the books on high school reading lists are either boring or you really could care less about whats going on in the book. For a very good example I give you the book 1984 by George Orwell, I personally despise that book. Sorry if i offend anyone but the only good part about that book is the idea it presents. The Narnian series however, is an easier read with all of the symbolism and excitement you can ask for!
Now I know i have said quite a bit about the symbolism you can find in these books, most of the symbolism in these books has to deal with the Cristian religion, maybe and very sadly that is why this book isn't on schools reading lists. The symbolism I found in these books that I had never seen before is how it isn't Aslan who swoops in to save all of the kings of Narnia, he sends children to help them for him. It brought to my mind all of those lessons on "if ye do it unto the least of my brethren..." I sat there for a minute after making this realization that even in the books these little lessons about serving those around you are there.
One last thing. I think that you should read the Narnian series, if not for the simple pleasure of reading then for the challenge of seeing all of the relations between the books and the christian religion. That is your mission should you choose to accept it, and I sincerely hope that you do.
I recently reread Narnia too. It's such a fantastic series, and it's really amazing how many ties there are to Christ and life in general. It is beautifully written and I have very high regaurds for C.S. Lewis. It's definately worth the read, plus the sheer joy of a well written story.
